Benefits of success are what everybody wants to feel fulfilled and satisfied. I have identified the psychological benefits of success as happiness, peace of mind, freedom and control over one's life.
I believe that these are universal benefits created by success. It is my hypothesis that people of all ages, races, economic status, religious preferences and relationship commitments seek the benefits of success.
I have noticed that, often times, people are not motivated to be successful in particular activities, but instead are motivated to acquire the benefits of success. Let me provide you with some examples.
Across street from my office is a GM plant. I have talked to GM employees with very little experience as well as people who have retired from the shops. There have been consistent themes in these talks. First of all, many of these factory workers have not been motivated to find success by working in a factory. They have not remained at GM, because they like their jobs and want to be successful factory workers. They have remained in the shop, because they wanted the paychecks and other benefits derived from working in the shop.
I've also had the opportunity of talking to many parents and teenagers. I have seen the frustration of many parents who have been unable to motivate their adolescents to become successful in school. We all know many teenagers are not motivated to excel in school. These students can sometimes be motivated to achieve by pointing out the benefits they will have in their life for successfully completing school.
As I indicated yesterday there are many benefits from success. Many of the benefits of success are specific and generated by the achievement of specific goals. Success for the GM workers and students, often times, are financial and materialistic.
What, oftentimes, is overlooked by many people are the psychological benefits of success that are generated by every and all successful accomplishments. Not all people experience these benefits, however. There are many reasons why the natural, psychological benefits are not experienced by people.
Today, I'm not going to talk about why people do not experience the benefits of success. I do want to take the opportunity to emphasize the importance of experiencing the benefits of success following success.
I recommend that after a successful endeavor, people claim their psychological benefits of success passionately by saying or thinking "I am happy, I have peace of mind, I am free and I am in control of my life".
Acknowledging and experiencing the psychological benefits of success is a key to finding meaning and satisfaction in life.
- These statements will create and solidify a very positive self-concept;
- Verbalizing these powerful benefits of success creates emotional momentum; and
- Experiencing the benefits of success gives you the power to create and control your emotional environment.
Today, I am going to ask you to think of the benefits of success you have, because you can read. Imagine what your life would be like, if you could not read a menu in a restaurant; a map or street sign; or a written assignment given to you by your boss. Successful reading can give you intense and genuine happiness, peace of mind, freedom and control over your life. Enjoy the psychological benefits of success, because you can successfully read.
